News related to Spanish language and cultura of Spain, information about Córdoba and unique offers.

Córdoba

Córdoba is a small city in the south of Spain, central point on the transport network in Andalusia and meeting place of three great cultures: Christian, Jewish and Islamic. It holds the UNESCO World Heritage title and every year is visited by millions of tourists. No one who has once come here, forgets the atmosphere and charming places discovered at every step.

Córdoba's cultural programme is very varied, though certainly May is the most special month: Festival of the Crosses, patios competition, fair. But we cannot forget such renowned events as the International Guitar Festival in July, the White Night of Flamenco in June or Eutopía Festival in September. As you can see there is no time to be bored in Córdoba. You can choose between various cultural events, sightseeing and spending time visiting monuments of the capital or make a tour around the wineries, olive oil mills and drying places of ham in the province. All this, of course, while tasting good wine and tapas in the adjoining terraces under a blue sky and sunshine.

When the sun sets, discos, pubs and bars are always ready to welcome you so that you can spend a night full of entertainment. For calmer ones, the Corredera square offers a more relaxed and restful atmosphere to spend a quiet evening in the moonlight.

Córdoba is a tourist destination in Spain that you cannot miss. We are waiting for you to reveal you its secrets!

Monuments of Córdoba

Walking through the streets of Córdoba you can enjoy the shade of a modern city that retains the unique character reflecting its history. From the Jewish Quarter to the Alcázar strolling along the Mosque, the walk is full of aesthetic and cultural contrasts. The visit around Córdoba should begin in the southern bank of the Guadalquivir River. That is where the merchants and emissaries who traveled along the Via Augusta from Rome to Cadiz used to enter the city.

Roman Bridge

From the Roman times until the 20th century it was the only place to cross the Guadalquivir River. The bridge is based on sixteen arches and its image is inseparably linked to the city. The view of the Roman Bridge, along with the Calahorra Tower on the southern bank and the Triumphal Arch, as well as the Mosque reflected on the white limestone houses of the Jewish Quarter and Sierra Morena in the north, is the symbol of Córdoba. Today it is a favourite place of Córdoba inhabitants and tourists to go for a walk.

Mosque-Cathedral

It is worth taking a closer look at the Mosque-Cathedral of Córdoba, a unique in the world pearl of architecture, located in the centre of the Jewish Quarter. Built on a Visigoth church and enlarged five times, it reflects the former splendor of the city that for centuries was the capital of the Caliphate. In the 16th century, many years after the Spanish Reconquest, a Catholic cathedral was built inside the Mosque. Today the building is a unique architectural treasure visited by tourists from all around the world, that fascinates not only the architects but also the experts of Eastern art and cultures.

Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos

A defensive castle constructed on the orders of King Alfonso XI in 1328. Built on the ruins of an ancient Muslim castle, it became the seat of the Catholic Monarchs for eight years. What really impresses are the beautiful gardens full of cypresses, palm and lemon trees, flowers and fountains. In spring it is a good place to take an evening stroll among the blossoming orange trees, in summer every corner of it is filled with the scent of jasmines.

Caliph's Baths

Remains of ancient Arab baths located near the Alcázar. They were discovered by accident in 1903. Today in Córdoba you can visit the museum and know this Eastern custom, and then experience some relaxing moments in the Arab baths located in the old city. After a bath there is nothing better than visiting a tea-house and with rhythms of Arabic music in the background, relax with a cup of tea.

Synagogue

The synagogue, located in Judíos Street, was built in the 14th century in Mudejar style. It consists of a small prayer room and three balconies, where women once used to pray. We can also find there a small niche with an arch, where the altar stood once.

Viana Palace

Palace from the 16th century, which attracts the attention for its beautiful cloisters and courtyards, each one reflecting in a different way the design of a typical Andalusian house, with an inside patio and fountains to cool down the inhabitants during the hot days.

Medina Azahara

Ruins of the Arab palace complex from the 10th century located about eight kilometers to the west from Córdoba. The city was built by Abd al-Rahman III as evidence of his power, though the legend says that the Caliph wanted to give a unique present to his favourite wife - Azahara. It is believed that if the city had not been destroyed in 1010 during the Civil War, today it could have been an architectural treasure comparable to the Alhambra in Granada.
